The treatment of axillary tumors depends on several factors.
If the tumor is benign, such as a lipoma or a cyst, surgical removal is often a common option. This is a relatively straightforward procedure where the tumor is cut out under local anesthesia, and the prognosis is usually good.
For malignant axillary tumors, which could be a sign of breast cancer metastasis or other cancers, a more comprehensive treatment plan is needed. Surgery is usually the first step to remove the tumor as much as possible. Then, chemotherapy may be used to kill any remaining cancer cells and prevent their spread. Radiation therapy can also be applied to the axillary area to target and destroy cancer cells. Immunotherapy or targeted drug therapy might also be considered depending on the specific type of cancer.
